SummerLake is a small and quiet place (population 90) in central Oregon where the Playa Residency is located. I was a resident there in 2011 and it was my very first time visiting the state. I spent two months on the property and surrounding areas, hiking up nearby logging roads and being cautiously aware of mountain lions.

The lake that sits on the border of Playa is emptied every year for irrigation purposes so at certain points of the year, you can walk across the 8 mile lake bed. This was my first time learning about a high desert, which is a unique ecosystem with high altitude and little precipitation, this one dominated by sage, which incidentally, I am slightly allergic to.
